You could be forgiven for thinking that Sustainability is just a buzz word but it is here to stay. For Wyboston Lakes Resort this gives us the opportunity to bring our diverse efforts under one umbrella and create a culture of conscience in what we do and how we do it.
We are focused on reducing our energy consumption, food waste, packaging waste, water usage and our carbon footprint. We are focused on environmentally friendly initiatives, which will benefit our employees, our community and ultimately our planet.
Our slogan, More Sustainable, No Apology, means that we may make decisions that are not the 'norm' or not popular, in order to avoid waste, use less energy or make us more sustainable for the future. We hope are clients will support us and join us in this quest.
We will be launching our 2020 “Green Objectives” later this year but look forward to working with both our clients and suppliers on making better choices to benefit future generations.
You may not see the direct correlation between energy use and the environment but by using less power, we reduce the amount of toxic fumes released by power plants. By doing this, it means we conserve limited natural resources that would otherwise be used for power. By taking steps to reduce our energy intake, we contribute to a healthier and happier world.
How are we doing?
We won't apologise for asking guests to turn off lights and heating or saving on laundry if not essential, we all need to play our part for the sake of the generations to come.
Wyboston Lakes is very proud to be Zero to Landfill for yet another year. Managing waste is hugely important, especially on a large site like ours. Waste has massive impacts on the environment. food waste will eventually rot, but in the process, it can generate methane gas, which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. Plastics are not biodegradable and so often it ends up in our oceans where 80% of marine litter is composed of plastic. Fragile ecosystems are under threat from human activity, including climate change and pollution and as a result, we are now seeing a dramatic decline in reef health and coral cover across the globe.
We are actively seeking to reduce our paper consumption in all areas across site and have already reduced our flip chart use by replacing with squiggle boards and digital flip charts in the conference rooms.
In the Hotel bedrooms, we have supplied digital information to guests which save both on paper and printing.
In the Spa we supply our guests with disposable, bio-degradable hair towels to reduce the need to launder and we have replaced plastic drinking water cups with paper.
In June 2019 we achieve Silver Status in the Green Tourism Awards. The award was granted by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK & Ireland with over 2400 members. It is the only national certification programme endorsed by the national tourism agencies.
Wyboston Lakes Resort was assessed by a qualified grading advisor against a rigorous set of 145 criteria, covering a range of areas including energy and water efficiency, waste management, purchasing, travel, biodiversity and more.
We will be launching our 2020 “Green Objectives” later this year but look forward to working with both our clients and suppliers on making better choices to benefit our future generations and ultimately our planet.
