Wyboston Lakes Resort wins prestigious Sustainability Award

C&E Awards Win 2023

Award-winning conference, training and leisure venue Wyboston Lakes Resort has won another prestigious award, this time for an innovative sustainability initiative.

The resort won the Sustainability Award at the coveted Conference & Events Awards.

The Award is for its Room2Grow scheme. Since it was launched a year ago, 26,000 eco-conscious guests staying more than one night at Wyboston Lakes Resort have chosen to have a tree planted on the resort instead of having their room cleaned. The whole Wyboston Lakes Resort team have been planting them on the 380-acre site.

Among the judges’ comments were “A vast, robust and impressive sustainability programme - this to me is the standout in the category in terms of doing the most to genuinely transform.” Another wrote “I loved this entry; a venue that has clearly had sustainability at the heart of its strategy for a number of years.”

Louisa Watson, Director of Marketing, said: “This is superb testimony to the continuing innovation of our ‘Green Team’ and our philosophy of ‘More Sustainable No Apology’. With the shortlist including so many major organisations with impressive sustainability schemes, we’re very proud and excited to have won.”

The resort’s commitment to sustainability has been independently accredited by earning gold awards from the Green Tourism Awards and the IACC, and EcoSmart Platinum Venue Award from Greengage Solutions.

In September Wyboston Lakes Resort published a 4-year Green Energy Roadmap as the foundation for its plan to become self-sufficient by producing its own green energy using the natural resources available at the Resort, which will help to achieve its Net Zero Carbon Emissions target.  All electric energy on-site now comes from renewable resources, reducing the resort’s carbon footprint by 65 percent.

Zero-to-landfill was achieved for the sixth consecutive year. It is currently eradicating fossil fuels from the site and ensuring that zero food waste goes off-site. The People’s Pantry, encouraging colleagues to take home remaining freshly made food that would otherwise go to waste, is the latest initiative to help with this, and a biodigester is being introduced.

The resort’s Woodlands Event Centre was also Highly Commended by the judges of the Best Event Venue category at another major meetings industry event, the micebook Awards.

Steve Jones, Managing Director of Wyboston Lakes Resort said; “It’s wonderful to be recognised as one of the best conference and event venues in the country, whether it is for quality of the facilities or for our approach to sustainability.”
